Overview
Al Quaraouiyine (Arabic: جامعة القرويين, Amazigh: ⵜⴰⵙⴷⴰⵡⵉⵜ ⵏ ⵍⵇⴰⵕⴰⵡⵉⵢⵉⵏ, French: Al Quaraouiyine University) is a university located in Fez, Morocco. According to tradition, its construction began in 859 during the reign of the Idrisid dynasty. It is considered the oldest university in the world still in operation by UNESCO, the Guinness Book of Records3, and by several historians.
In the twelfth century, a whole series of names among the greatest will be associated in one way or another with the Quaraouiyine: the great precursors of Sufism, such as Ibn Hrizim, Abu Madyane, Abdeslam Ben Mchich Alami, the philosophers Avenpace and Averroes, the geographer Al Idrissi but also Maimonides, Ibn Khaldoun and Leo the African to name but a few.
It is ranked 95th in the 2016 Regional Ranking of Arab Universities (U.S.News & World Report).
